CENTRE RULES

RULES AND CONDITIONS OF USE FOR CHIMERA CLIMBING CENTRE BMC Participation statement

“The British Mountaineering Council recognises that climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.”
Chimera Climbing Centre is an artificial bouldering environment. The risks involved are no less serious than when climbing outside on a crag or mountain. There is an additional risk that bolt-on holds can spin or break. Should a hold spin or break please immediately inform a member of staff. The soft flooring under the bouldering walls is designed to provide a more comfortable landing for climbers falling from the bouldering wall and does not guarantee your safety. THE SOFT FLOORING DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOUR SAFETY. (waivers)

Uncontrolled falls are likely to result in injuries to yourself or others.
Climbing beyond your capabilities on any wall is likely to result in a fall. Any fall may result in an injury despite the safety systems in place to avoid it. You must make your own assessment of the risks whenever you climb.

Our Duty of Care

The rules of the climbing centre set out below are not intended to limit your enjoyment of the facilities. They are part of the duty of care that we, as operators, owe to you, the customer, by law. As such they are not negotiable and if you are not prepared to abide by them then the staff must politely ask you to leave.

Your Duty of Care

You also have a duty of care to act responsibly towards the other users of the centre. The Guidelines for Use below are for your own and other users’ safety. These describe the accepted methods of use and how customers would normally be expected to behave towards each other.

Unsupervised Climbing

Before you climb without supervision you are required to register to say that you know how to use the equipment, that you are prepared to abide by the Rules and Guidelines for Use of Chimera Climbing Centre and that you understand the risks involved in your participation.

You must be competent in the basic safety knowledge required to use the centre. This will be described to you during your registration and you should ask a member of staff if any of the rules or guidelines for use of Chimera Climbing Centre are not clear to you.

After Registration you will be recorded as a registered or supervised boulderer. Supervised boulderers must be signed in and supervised by an Over 18 registered boulderer at all times whilst in the centre.

Unsupervised climbing is just that. Staff will provide whatever help and advice they can, but instruction in the use of equipment or climbing techniques will only be provided where it has been booked and paid for in advance. If you are not con dent in the use of any climbing equipment or technique then do not attempt to use it without the supervision of someone who is competent to do so.

Supervised Climbing

An adult who has registered as an Over 18 registered boulderer at the centre may supervise up to two climbers as long as they are prepared to take full responsibility for the safety of those people. Groups of three or more supervised climbers of any age must only be supervised by an instructor deemed to be of the relevant competency.

Chimera Climbing Centre Rules

• Report to reception on each visit before you boulder.
• Do not sit, stand or boulder under other people who are bouldering.
• Do not climb over the top of the wall except on the top out boulder. All climbs end with two hands on the last marked hold.
• Keep bags and personal items in the lockers or shelves NOT on the mats, doors or walkways.
• Avoid uncontrolled falls. Do not jump from the walls.

Chimera Climbing Centre guidelines for use:

• Report any problems with the walls, holds or other boulderers’ behaviour to a member of staff immediately.
• Do not wear jewellery, particularly rings, when bouldering, these can catch and cause injury.
• Do not attempt to “spot” someone unless you know what you are doing and they want you to spot them.
• Bouldering is physically demanding and you should warm up before the session and cool down at the end as you would for any high intensity exercise such as sprinting.
• The training aids are designed for use by experienced climbers and should not be used by under 18 year olds.

By registering to climb at Chimera Climbing Centre I confirm that I understand the conditions of use, rules and guidelines laid out above and realise that failure to comply with the rules and conditions of use could result in injury to myself or others, removal of competent, registered boulderer status and/or expulsion from Chimera Climbing Centre. I understand that use of Chimera Climbing Centre is an unsupervised activity (except when participating in a paid instructed group) and I am responsible for my own safety.
